BRIYAH - Intellectual Pursuits

This is the world of the intellect, the realm of the mind, of knowledge, belief and thinking. It is the realm of abstraction.

Intellectual Pursuits. "Shnayim she-yoshvin ve-yeash beineihem divrei Torah, Shechina shruya. - "When two people share words of Torah, Gods Presence dwells between them".Or Shalom is committed to accessible Judaism for everyone and we do everything we can to enable Jews to take ownership over their Jewish spiritual lives. Classes for all age levels are taught both by Or Shalom's rabbi and by other knowledgeable and experienced members of the community. Click on the calendar of events to see if and when any classes are available.

Adult Education. We offer a variety of courses. We have had active groups studying the Talmud's perspective on prayer, the Musar teachings of Reb Israel Salanter, prayer book Hebrew for beginners, Talmud, Jewish mysticism, Hassidic thought, feminist perspectives on the Torah, Abraham Heschel, men's sexuality & Torah, Bibliodrama and Yoga. Most classes are offered at no cost to members of Or Shalom, although there might be a nominal fee for non-members or a collection for Tzedaka. Here are the current offerings. For those new to Judaism (or returning to it) the Exploring Judaism course may be what you seek.

Come and learn. Current and upcoming classes are listed in Keren Or and on our calendar of events. We welcome teachers - if you have an idea for a class, contact our office at (604) 872-1614.

Interested in learning Hebrew? You might want to check out the classes and mini-ulpanim offered through the JCC.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah. An Or Shalom Bar/Bat Mitzvah is tailored to the abilities of the young person involved and to the sensitivities of the entire family. Our bnai mitzvah generally chant from the Torah and prepare a dvar Torah (a teaching based on their studies, their understanding and their personal experience of their Torah readings). Many lead part of the Shabbat morning service as well. Or Shalom has a number of experienced teachers who can help young people and their families prepare for this transformative occasion. See our guide to planning an Or Shalom Bar(t) Mitzvah - learn about ceremony, food, study, and other requirements and practicalities. Since Bar/Bat Mitzvah signals entry into the community, we expect families to have been actively involved with Or Shalom for at least two years prior to the event.

Creative Judaism As well as a commitment to learn from our received sources, Or Shalom has a commitment to continuing the process of Jewish creativity, often in non-text forms. Many of these offerings will be shared on this website as the site grows. Look for the following:

Communications. Or Shalom has an email list. It's the place to read announcements of upcoming events, community news, and random contributions of poetry and Torah.Read this page to learn how to subscribe, or how to read the list without subscribing, and also the halacha of netiquette that we follow.

Keren Or is our community newsletter. It has news of upcoming events, reviews of past events, reports from various committees, writings by our rabbi and members, poetry and more..

Back copies of Keren Or, dating to 1986, are on file at the Jewish Museum and Archives located at the JCC.

You may read some back issues of Keren Or online to get a sense of our community. The following issues are in regular HTML format:
     The December 1997 issue
     The August 1998 issue

The following issues are in PDF format. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to read them. (You can download it for free by clicking on the button below). The rtf document is a text only file that contains the same information as the other version Keren Or, though without the pictures and layout. It can be downloaded without Adobe and is compatible with screen-reading technology.)
